Pareto principle: Why to move from ARIS 7.x, 9.x or 10.x to Microsoft Visio?

The ARIS modeling software is still a very famous tool in the BPM market. But in many organizations the 80-20 rule (also knows as Pareto principle, see Wikipedia) takes effect.

In software business this rule means that 80% of users just using 20% of the software features. This is the outcome of a study of the Standish Group back in 2002, where they found that:

  • 45% of features were never used;
  • 19% used rarely;
  • 16% sometimes;
  • only 20% were used frequently or always.

Huge budgets are spent year by year for complex software and hardly anyone uses all the offered features. BPM software based upon Microsoft Visio 2010, 2013 or 2016 is much cheaper, more user-friendly and provides the essential features. The total cost of ownership can be significant lowered by lesser maintenance costs and lesser training and user support efforts. As business users prefer to work with Office-based software, they will be more productive in creating and improving the business process documentation.

The following Video shows how easily ARIS 7.x, 9.x and 10.x can be fully translated to Microsoft Visio:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHPbHzMQhw0

Supported are Visio 2013 and 2016. Visio 2010 is only supported on demand. A free trial is available, simply follow this link. The trial supports the translation with the roundtrip scenario from ARIS to Microsoft Visio and vice versa back to ARIS. This solution can also be employed in mixed tool environments based on both ARIS and Microsoft Visio, for instance to lower the number of ARIS licenses and have more Visio for regular business users.

Even better than using plain Visio would be BPM-X Designer which operates on top of Visio. BPM-X Designer supports ARIS filter conventions including support for Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft SQL Server as back-end repositories: See this blog post about Microsoft Visio and SharePoint for more information.
